Hold My Hand at Twilight — Is It Good?
“ What happens if you make a tune to someone’s heartbeat? ”
“ If you’re curious, maybe one day, I’ll compose to your heartbeat.”
Have you ever been scrolling through a streaming service and a show suddenly jumps out at you? That’s exactly what happened to me with this drama. Since it’s free-to-watch on Viki and the female lead looks undeniably charming, I decided to give it a go. But does the story live up to its initial allure? Let’s find out!
Plot summary:
Asagi Soramame, a bright small-town girl, arrives in Tokyo to chase her fiancé. There, she encounters Umino Oto, an aspiring musician, by chance. Their paths become intertwined Soramame ended up in the same boarding house as Oto. Despite their contrasting personalities, an unlikely friendship begins to bloom.
What I liked:
1. Soramame’s positive influence and healthy relationship with Oto
This drama establishes a sweet foundation with the main leads developing a strong friendship. They do silly things together and argue like cat and mouse, and it’s clear they bring out the best in each other. Soramame draws Oto out of his shell, while Oto visibly brightens and expresses himself more freely in her presence.
They motivate and support each other. After seeing Soramame work hard to become a fashion designer, Oto is inspired and motivated to also pour his heart into his music.
2. Soramame’s confidence and cute dialect
Her dialect reminds me of the anime ‘Lovely Complex’, although I think it was a different dialect, it sounds similar. It’s natural for human to try to fit into new environment. Unlike many characters in other series or movies who move from rural areas to the big city and try to hide their background, Soramame embraces her roots, even in the face of potential judgement.
3. Realistic wardrobe
They reuse the same clothes and style it differently, which makes this drama more down to earth and realistic.
4. The boarding house
The boarding house looks super homey and warm.
What I disliked:
1. Soramame’s unrealistic career growth
Soramame, who shows no prior artistic talent or interest in fashion, suddenly becomes a gifted designer. This sudden shift feels so unrealistic. The reveal of her parents’ artistic backgrounds–a famous fashion designer mother and a painting genius father–offers a convenient explanation but raises questions about character development.
2. Lack foundation for romantic feelings
From what I see, this drama struggles to establish a romantic connection between Oto and Soramame. While both characters are likeable–Oto with his caring nature and Soramame with her bright personality–their interactions lack the spark that would convince viewers that they’re meant to be more than just friends. Therefore, their jealousy towards each other’s potential love interests feels rather unearned.
3. Slow and underwhelming
While it may aim for a slow-burn approach, the characters didn’t receive enough development or growth to fully benefit from it. This results in a drama that feels somewhat sluggish, and the overall impact on viewers might be underwhelming.
4. Time jump
On the last episode, they use a time jump. Here, the time jump feels like a shortcut. For this reason, we don’t see the relationship between the main leads develop naturally.
Is it worth your time?
No. But if you’re looking for a light and easy watch with a predictable plot and a happy ending, this could be an option for a slow day. However, it would not be on my recommendation list.
‘Hold My Hand at Twilight’ is available on Viki.
My rating: 2.5 out of 5.
